At Kids Soar, we add new chapters to our story every day! So many hands, love, and prayers have made Kids Soar what it is today.

In September of 1989, the women of Trinity United Methodist Church  opened their hearts and doors to the children living in the neighborhoods of downtown Roanoke. They met once a week to share a warm meal and offer a safe place for the children to go after school. Word got around and eventually this informal gathering of women and volunteers became Community Outreach Program (C.O.P.), an organization that recognized the incredible need for a more permanent path out of poverty for children in the Roanoke community, one that helped ensure that their basic needs such as food, clothes, and security were met, but that also played an important role in helping them acquire valuable skills for a successful future.

From about third grade onward, students read to learn instead of learn to read. Having the ability to read at grade level by third grade is vital to children’s education and future. Most of our children are referred to us by Roanoke County Public Schools as being below reading level. In order to make a permanent impact on their lives, we focus on getting them at or above reading level by third grade so that they are equipped with the tools needed to successfully educate themselves and become independent citizens. In order to better meet this goal, C.O.P. extended the after school program to meeting five nights a week. This change ensured that our children would receive consistent, quality care.

In the fall of 2018, we rebranded from C.O.P. to Kids Soar because that’s what we do, help kids soar! Since our humble beginnings in 1989, our organization has evolved into a literacy-based after school program that meets Monday to Friday and serves over forty children AND their families. Thanks to the support we’ve received, we are also able to offer a variety of youth and adult programs.
